The John Marshall Harlan High School Alumni Association, NFP., is a non-profit organization initiated in December 2001 and incorporated under the laws and statues of the State of Illinois in May 2001.

 

The John Marshall Harlan Alumni Association, NFP.,  is not affiliated with any for-profit organizations or individual classes using the John Marshall Harlan High School name, and maintains a single identity.

MADELEINE CAROL MYRICK NORTON

 

It is with heartfelt conviction in eternal life that I inform you that Madeleine, someone I held near and dear in my Spirit, has made her heavenly transition.  I was informed by Kimberly, Madeleine's daughter, that with Grace, valiant courage, and peacefulness, she passed mid-afternoon on Friday, March 13, 2009. 

 

Madeleine was a graduate of Harlan High School, Class of January, 1964; going on to complete both undergraduate and graduate studies at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. She recently retired from a stellar career as a professor in English at Malcolm X College where she impacted the lives of countless students and through much dedication, served tirelessly in many other capacities that contributed to the growth, development and reputation of the college. 

 

Madeleine's life and legacy will be celebrated on:

Harlanites, funeral services for Milton McGowan (Class of 1971) will be held at Trinity United Church of Christ on Monday December 22, 2008 4:00 pm visitation hour 5:00 pm  Memorial Service

 

 

Harlanites, funeral arrangements are set for retired Harlan coach and teacher Lee Umbles. Visitation will be Friday December 5,2008 at 3 pm and the wake is Saturday, 12-6-08 at 10:00 am at AA Rayner & Sons Funeral Home at 318 E 71st Street, Chicago, IL 60619. The funeral will follow at 11:00 am at St Columbanus Church, 331 E 71st Street, Chicago, IL 60619. The interment will be at Burr Oak Cemetery, 4400 W 127th Street, Alsip, IL

Lee Umbles was a longtime basketball coach and in the city and state halls of fame. Lee guided Harlan High School basketball teams to 3 city championships. He began his teaching career in 1960 as a physical education instructor at Judd elementary school. In 1966, he transferred to Harlan High School. His teaching and coaching career spanned 38 years. In the 1966-67, his first season as boys basketball coach at Harlan, he guided the Falcons to the Public League championship by defeating DuSable High School at the Amphitheater. His 22-7 team, led by Bob Henley, lost to York 72-70 in the super sectional at East Aurora (we were cheated). In 1969-70, Henry Thomas, Tim Bryant and Gilbert Jordan led Harlan to a 21-5 record. Harlan lost to East Aurora 68-61 in the super sectional. In 1970-71, Lee Umbles team led by Bryant, Jordan and future NBA player Greg Wilkins, went 22-6 but lost to the eventual state champion Thornridge 73-63 in the super sectional at Crete-Monee. Lee Umbles was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 1994.
 

 

Collin Miller, Harlan Grad, and brother of Joy Miller-Bowling (Class of 1964) passed away in June 2008.  Collin was married for 40 years and had one daughter and three grandchildren.  He lived in Danville, Illinois.

 

Harlanites, Our classmate Robert Travis made his transition on Thursday,  November 20th 2008.

Harlanites, George Raby, class of 1963, brother of Linda Raby class of 1968, made his transition on October 16th, 2008. Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 28th, 2008 at A. A. Rayner 1318 East 71st Street from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.

 

Harlanites, Doyle Johnson (Class of 1970) brother of Sandra Johnson (Class of 1968) has made his transition. His body will lay instate Thursday 4-7 pm, October 2nd and Friday all day, October 3rd until 6 pm when services start. Rhodes Funeral Home,  1018 W 79th Street,   Chicago, IL.

Harlanites, Floyd Brady, Class of 1964.  Floyd was on the winning basketball team, and was a wonderful human being. He worked for several non-profit  organizations,  that prepared talented minority youth for leadership in business &  industry. His services will be Saturday, February 9, 2007, 10AM.  Visitation  11AM funeral,  at Victory Cathedral Faith Church, 10441 S. Racine.
