Announcements
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!!!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the John Marshall Harlan High School Alumni Association for all of your support and dedication over the past two years. Especially the Board of Directors. In January 2010 as my term for President began I was charged with the responsibility of ensuring the goals and objectives and the day to day operation of the association were met. With the assistance of members of the Board of Directors and every one of you we achieved much. As the new administration took shape we embraced the theme of the " Bridge Builder" and continued to practicing one of it's most inspiring passage " there followed after me today a youth whose feet must pass this way, the journey that was as naught to me, to a fair-haired youth may a pitfall be, He too must cross in the twilight dim- good friend, I am building this bridge for him" by Will Allen Dromgoole. Here are some of the things we have accomplished over the past several years during the current administration: · Restructuring the By Laws was crucial to the JMHHAA moving forward and adjusting to modern times. Thank you First President Jamal Rasheed for your knowledge and help. · The 2010 Career Day was a great success as the number of alumni and volunteer participants increased dramatically. · October 22-24, 2010 for the first time in its history the Board of Directors held a retreat at the Indian lakes Resort. There we engaged in team building under the direction of inspirational speaker Freddy Penn. During the retreat we embraced the theme for the coming year of "Engagement". Getting other members of the association more involved with the association. The concept worked as in early 2011 we increased the number of Board of Directors to eighteen (18). As a result members Sharon Parrott-Thomas, Maria Glover-Stevens, Harold Jenkins, Betty Brooks, JoAnn Fastoff-Blackmon and Shawn Hawk were added to the Board. · Career Day 2011 exceeded all expectations. Therefore, a special acknowledgement is given to Sharon Harvey Massey, and the Career Day Committee: Harold Jenkins, Judy GrandPre’-Smith. · Moving forward we canceled the Back to the Roots Festival and adopted The Cabaret Party. Engaging in dining, dancing and enjoying spirits with alumni and guests the Friday before the annual picnic was awesome! · At the picnic we saw the largest participation of alumni and friends in the history of the event. The crowd is estimated to have exceeded 500 people. Joey Thurmond, Shirley Booker, Judy GrandPre’-Smith and the Picnic Committee are commended for a job well done! · As fall came upon us the momentum of the association continued and mushroomed into a slate of new officers was presented for election. Theodore Mustiful - President, Sharon Parrott-Thomas - Vice President, Floyd Simpson - Treasurer, Betty Brooks – Secretary and Harold Jenkins - Parliamentarian. As a result this star studded team was unanimously elected. Good Luck to each of you and the new administration. · The current Executive Board of Theodore Mustiful – Vice President, Charletta Mattox-Askia-Treasurer, and Cheryl Kirk-Jackson – Secretary performed admirably during their tenure of 2010-2011 and is commended for outstanding performance and service to the JMHHAA, NFP. In closing the past two years have been an experience of a life time for me personally. I will cherish every moment of giving back to Harlan High School. Don’t forget our old chant “Every where we go, people want to know, who we are, so we tell them, we are the Falcons……Mighty…..Mighty……Falcons!!!! Good Luck and God’s Speed, Kenneth M. Webb Sr, President JMHHAA 2010-2011
